Nupe Cloth 001


An antique cloth from the Nupe people of central Nigeria. Finely woven on a double-headed narrow strip loom, sewn selvedge to selvedge from a mix of cotton and silk featuring indigo dye and bold colourful embroidered embellishment. This is a traditional ceremonial cloth made and worn by a woman. With a deep and interesting history, the Nupe Cloth is one of Nigeria's less common textiles. This piece, circa 1960's, is in good condition.
