Tutsi Winnowing Basket

$260.00

Tutsi winnowing baskets, handcrafted by the Tutsi people of Rwanda. These baskets were traditionally used for winnowing the act of separating grain from husks through rhythmic shaking. Hand woven from natural grasses and fibre with a simple weave and coiled rim.

Made from delicate natural materials they have all been repaired and patched by hand, a mark of their age and use. As a result, each item is one-of-one and completely unique. Today they are recognised as fine craft objects to appreciate but work equally well hung on a wall or utilised as a platter.

Tutsi winnowing baskets are between 33-35cm in diameter.

Please note, as each piece is handmade, each one is unique. The group image listed provides a sense of the designs we have on hand. Your item will be selected from our available stock therefore, characteristics and patterns will vary.
