Mossi Cloth - Broken Caterpillar

This cloth is hand-woven by the Mossi people from central Burkina Faso, West Africa, who have been cultivating cotton for over 1000 years. They are made as part of a co-operative that supports the preservation of traditional textiles throughout West Africa, and remain culturally significant to this day.

In rural villages, elderly women hand spin the cotton, after which the men weave it on horizontal narrow-warp looms creating thin long strips. These stripes are sewn together selvedge to selvedge to create unique, patterned cotton cloths. Perfect at the end of a bed, hung on the wall or draped over a couch.

Due to the handmade nature of these textiles, unique details and tonal variations are present in the unbleached cotton weave.
