An antique ‘Imbenge’ Zulu Beer Pot Cover, South Africa, circa 1960’s. Zulu people have a long steeped tradition of making beer, for generations their fermented sorghum beer has been made in large clay pots, during the brewing process the pots are covered with these ‘Imbenge’ to protect the beer from dust and insects, etiquette requires that when the beer is ready these covers would be used as a rest for the skimming spoon.
These lids are woven tightly from local ilala palm and often intricately beaded with bright plastic beads in traditional geometric patterns. An antique and collectable objects that shows signs of age and use.
