Mud Cloth Squares

$160.00

Made in Mali the Mud Cloth also known as the Bogolanfini is an important part of Malian culture. Strips of cotton fabric are woven on a narrow loom and then sewn together to form a larger cloth. The cloth is then soaked in a bath of mulch of leaves from local trees, geometric motifs are drawn on the fabric with a special mud that has been kept for over 1 year. The iron in the mud reacts to the acid in the dyed cloth to produce a contrast design. Traditionally worn by hunters as camouflage and worn by women after child birth the Bogolanfini is a ritual for protection.

Each textile is handmade using traditional techniques, slight imperfections occur making each one unique.
