This antique Crown is from the Yourba people of south west Nigeria. This Crown is the most important symbol of royal power and authority in the Yoruba culture and is typically worn by the king, typically the first king of Yoruba gave a beaded crown to each of his sons and sent them forth to establish their own kingdoms. The Crowns always features a face to identify the king, while the birds represent female elders. The beaded veil is to keep viewers from seeing the king’s face, masking his individuality, and also focusing attention on the real focus of power, the crown.

Beautifully embellished with tiny white beads this artefact is a special piece with a significant story.
