Jürgen Beck’s photographs of the house approach the building as if in search of something. He captures the overgrown paths that he walks to take him to the house, while steering clear of views of the coast and the Côte d’Azur beach and avoiding long shots, as these would falsely enlarge the space, which was designed as an intimate place for work and leisure activities. This establishes a dialogue between the photographs and the architecture; just like Gray herself in the space she designed, the pictures are in search of an expression of openness that admits other forms of life and work, a flexible structure to accommodate the rhythm of the days and everyday situations. Beck directs our eye to a design that takes into consideration people’s psychological and emotional needs and gives things their own name and their own relationships. The images are accompanied by an essay by Swiss author Dorothee Elmiger, who extends Beck’s view of Gray by introducing fragments of text that switch between analysis and impressionistic accounts.

Jürgen Beck lives and works in Zurich, Switzerland. The decorative tokonoma alcove in an old wooden home becomes an ad hoc mihrab, while a water tank atop a former printing factory stands in as a qubba dome. This annual publication aims to simultaneously promote and investigate the details of manufacturing techniques and expertise used in art, design, interior architecture, industry and trade. Each issue focuses on a particular technique (moulding, folding, etc.), and the theme is used to select feature subjects and pieces, as well as the persons interviewed. Tools is crafted as a comprehensive inventory of design techniques. Weaving together past and present, it draws on history to illustrate how techniques have been handed down through the ages, paying homage to the creators behind the cult objects we use in our everyday lives, and whose work embodies the stories that lie at the very genesis of our shared human ingenuity.

The fifth issue of Tools explores the theme of spinning – both literal and metaphorical. From the Earth's rotation to the cycles of time, spinning is at the core of life, movement, and creation. Craftspeople have long harnessed rotational forces with tools like potter’s wheels, lathes, and spindles. Glassblowers, dancers, skaters, and machines alike use spin to shape, move, and express. This issue celebrates the beauty and power of circular motion – whether in natural rhythms, kinetic art, wind turbines, or the mind’s looping thoughts.

Measures: 21 x 30 cm
Pages: 248
Binding: Softcover
