Initiated by the Royal Tropical Institute of Amsterdam, the trip was intended to 'explore the changing patterns in architecture and symbolism among the (Tana) Sa‘dan Toraja'. On the way back from Rantepao to Ujung Pandang airport, Schulz-Dornburg passed the distinctive houses of the Bugis or To-Ugiq people, perched on the yellow paddy fields. Fascinated by their complex, expressive architectures, she began to photograph the houses in the short time she had before leaving, realising that the structures would likely not exist in their traditional form for much longer. The result is a body of work that not only surveys the houses’ physical forms but also considers wide-ranging ideas of physical and emotional homebuilding and the precarious place of tradition in the present day.

Poised between heaven and earth and standing above the water when the rice fields are flooded, the Bugis houses reflect the creation myth of their people, in which the gods of the upper and lower worlds came together to create man to populate the uninhabited middle world. Constructed in the main room is a simple white kitchen, which surreally extends over the entire length of the space. Here, the profoundly everyday nature of the counter meets the attempt to grasp abstract concepts of infinity. A blankness pervades the room which is punctuated by a few scattered objects: leftover cake is carefully stowed away in Tupperware boxes, recordings of jazz instrumentals drift out from a radio, and outside garden furniture is already tucked in under its plastic cover. A longing to preserve fleeting situations repeatedly arises, no matter how temporary the moment might be. In a second room, found photographs are framed together with pages of text taken from a largely forgotten self-help organisation called Re-evaluation Counselling. She was a founding member of the designer's group Memphis for which she designed numerous textiles and carpets, along with objects and furniture. Since 1987, Nathalie Du Pasquier has increasingly devoted herself to painting. Most of her paintings describe the relationship between shapes, objects and spaces. The space and the work form an inseparable whole. Various objects reappear as protagonists in different contexts of her work. The journey through her work is a journey through the world of her things. The game referred to in the ambiguous title is concerned with several things at the same time: playing with things, playing with constructions and compositions in the picture and in the space, the challenge to the viewers.

Measures: 19.5 x 25.5cm
Binding: Soft cover
Pages: 24

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0257/7376/8801/products/Cover_6bead739-7b73-4987-971b-b3be2bc7333c.jpg?v=1635374838
would-you-rather-mara-zust-christoph-elias-mei
Would you rather, Mara Züst & Christoph Elias Mei

The children’s book, Would you rather... by English author and illustrator John Burningham was first published in 1979. Christoph Elias Meier and Mara Züst took Burningham's incantation one step further and adapted the book’s meaning so that it asks about the essence of things (graffiti on a building, a furrow of a brow). Photographed over the last year while in transit, the characteristically intuitive, off-the-cuff images that populate this volume offer countless vantages – near and far – of airplanes on the tarmac or in flight, rerouting our gaze from the pragmatic and economic towards the poetic. Here, Marcopoulos appeals to the notion that flying – for all its supposed monotony – is still something close to a miracle.

Measures: 20 x 14cm
Binding: Soft cover
Pages: 80 + postcard

'These 45 paintings were made during the confinement months of April and May 2020 at Casa Franco, in Guadalajara, Mexico.
